Physical Therapy for Rotator Cuff Injury
A common injury of the shoulder, rotator cuff tears or strains are typically caused due to overuse or sudden impact. While the shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body – allowing us to move our arms up, down, forwards, backwards, side to side, and in a 360 degree rotation – it is also more prone to injury than our other more secure joints. The rotator cuff consists of four muscles that both stabilize the shoulder and create its extensive range of movement. Common injuries of these muscles include: tears, inflammation and impingement. Often referred to as “baseball shoulder,” a rotator cuff tear is common in baseball pitchers due to overuse. While aging increases your chance of rotator cuff injury, it is commonly seen among young and active people as well.
Symptoms of rotator cuff injury include:
- Acute pain in the shoulder and upper arm
- A dull aching feeling in the shoulder at night, often disrupting sleep
- Arm weakness
- Reduced range of shoulder and / or arm movement
- A popping or clicking noise when moving your shoulder
- A “stuck” feeling when moving the shoulder
Injuries caused by a simple strain may be treated at home with the RICE rule (Rest, Ice, Elevation, Compression). If your shoulder does not heal in a few weeks, it is important to see a physical therapist in Utah because there may be something more complicated going on. Traumatic injuries or chronic rotator cuff pain related to overuse should also be addressed by a physical therapist.
