Physical Therapy for Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an improper curvature of the spine, a condition that can lead to pain, muscle weakness, improper alignment, respiratory issues, fatigue, stiffness, and other medical problems. Typically diagnosed in adolescence, scoliosis affects women more often than men. Scoliosis that is progressive can lead to an increase of symptoms and more severe problems in adulthood. Traditionally maintained with bracing or surgery, prognosis for scoliosis was simply to wait and see if it progressed enough to require surgery. Physical therapy, however, has proven to be a useful alternative treatment.

At the Rock Run Layton physical therapy office, we specialize in physical rehabilitation for a variety of conditions. Scoliosis is a common condition we treat and we follow the standard Schroth Method among other physical therapy exercises to correct spinal curvature.

Every case of scoliosis presents a unique curvature of the spine, meaning that therapy must be customized to the individual. The Schroth Method focuses on three areas that can be customized to the patient's exact case:
  • Restoring muscular symmetry and encouraging correct postural alignment - A curved spine causes imbalance in the body. Some muscles will be stronger and others will become weaker. Schroth exercises target all muscles evenly, encouraging a balanced support around the spine. Equally strengthening muscles will help force the spine into proper alignment and naturally correct posture.
  • Breathing exercises that target the concave side of the body - Rotational angular breathing is a breathing exercise that helps rotate the spine back to its proper position and strengthen the collapsed lung on the patient's concave side of the body.
  • Exercises to increase daily awareness of posture - The curvature of the spine in patients with scoliosis forces their entire body out of alignment (one shoulder may be higher than the other, the hips are not square, etc.). At the Rock Run Layton physical therapy office, we teach patients how to bring awareness to their posture at every moment. Daily exercises performed at home can increase this awareness and encourage proper alignment.

If you or a loved one is suffering from scoliosis, physical rehabilitation is available in Layton at Rock Run. While treatment for scoliosis is best when started right away, the Schroth Method has been proven beneficial for adults as well as adolescents. As a leader in Layton physical rehabilitation for scoliosis, Rock Run is happy to offer patients an alternative, non-surgical therapy.
